In an era increasingly defined by technological reliance, semiconductors stand as the bedrock of modern society. These minuscule chips power our electronic devices, communication systems, and even vital tools in sectors like agriculture, healthcare, and transportation. Recognizing the immense socio-economic potential and strategic significance of this silent technological revolution, India is spearheading the development of a robust semiconductor ecosystem and cultivating a skilled workforce.

India aims to achieve self-sufficiency and global leadership in semiconductor technology, driven by projections indicating over a million job opportunities in various semiconductor-related roles over the next five years. Notably, the National Association of Software and Service Companies (Nasscom) and Zinnov report a substantial increase in global capability centers focusing on semiconductor activities in India.

Key players in chip design, including Intel, Texas Instruments, AMD, Nvidia, and Qualcomm, have established design and research centers in India. Recent initiatives, such as AMD’s inauguration of its largest global design center in Bengaluru, underscore India’s growing prominence in semiconductor innovation.

Significant investment projects, such as Tata Electronics’ partnership with Power Chip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC) to establish semiconductor fab plants in Gujarat and Assam, further highlight India’s commitment to semiconductor manufacturing. Additionally, Micron’s investment in a semiconductor plant in Gujarat, slated to produce “Made in India” memory chips, underscores the country’s burgeoning semiconductor capabilities.

Despite these advancements, India remains heavily reliant on semiconductor imports, prompting strategic initiatives like the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) to foster domestic semiconductor production. ISM offers incentives and support schemes to encourage investment in semiconductor manufacturing and design, complemented by efforts to enhance talent development in chip design.

Geopolitical uncertainties, particularly amid the China-US trade war, have prompted companies to diversify their production bases, with India emerging as a preferred destination for semiconductor manufacturing. This strategic positioning aligns with India’s ambition to become a global hub for semiconductor design, manufacturing, and technology development.

Presently, Bengaluru and Hyderabad host the majority of India’s semiconductor global capability centers (GCCs), reflecting the nation’s strong commitment to semiconductor innovation. With a burgeoning semiconductor market valued at $15 billion and projected to reach $55 billion by 2026, India’s semiconductor industry holds significant growth potential.

However, challenges persist, particularly in bridging the skill gap in advanced chip design and fabrication. Efforts to attract and retain talent, including outreach programs targeting professionals in countries like Taiwan, Singapore, and Malaysia, are underway to bolster India’s semiconductor workforce.

Looking ahead, India’s semiconductor industry is poised to drive technological innovation, economic growth, and global leadership. With the necessary talent, resources, and infrastructure in place, India is on track to realize its ambition of becoming a dominant player in the semiconductor landscape.
